We’re doing something similar with an Anglo-American wedding, but we’re farther along. I’m afraid you should go onto one of those ghastly American wedding websites to get a feel for the thing – you could try www,theknot.com. The average cost for a wedding in America today is more than $ 25,000, but we have found that it has been extremely easy to plan a properly nice one for less than half that amount. Our biggest expense, by a long way, is food.

To source bands, you can use gigmasters.com – they are a national band clearing-house. However, the website takes a cut and this is not the cheapest way to go. Live bands sourced in other ways could run as little as $ 600-$ 800, but not less. We found our band through the contra dance circuit (these are popular community dances that feature Celtic, swing, bluegrass, or folk music), and that was much cheaper than a more formal “wedding band.” In America, it is also common to have a DJ instead of live music.

The major costs divide as follows: 1. church (or wedding space) and reception space; 2. food, catering; 3. rentals. You can find venues that are all-inclusive, but unless you do this you will need to act as go-between with these three different organizations (making sure you rent the serving dishes needed by the caterers, for example).

If you are looking to have a church wedding, you should know that there is no standard price in America, and the costs vary widely. The church near my parents wanted $ 3,000 for a wedding there, while our own church (same denomination!) asked for a $ 500 “donation” only.

If you are Catholic or Church of Ireland, you should know that Americans take their religion unbelievably seriously and will sometimes be uncomfortable participating in a ceremony conducted in a non-Protestant church. (In America, neither a Catholic nor an Anglican wedding would be seen as Protestant.) We’ve disregarded this entirely, but it is probably politic to be aware of the fact.

It is also extremely easy to marry in a civil ceremony with a non-religious officiant.

The relevant legal authority in America is the state, NOT the nation. The prohibition on established religion in America means that states cannot recognize religious marriage as official. Your daughter and her fiance will therefore have to apply for a state marriage license – in most states, this is easy and the cost is fairly trivial. It is common to register a marriage in this way as much as two weeks before the actual ceremony. Nonetheless, we are doing our marriage license the same day as the wedding ceremony, for immigration purposes: we think it would be easier to tell US and UK officials when we were married if the ceremony date matches the date on the state certificate.

It is customary, but not altogether required, to offer a full meal at an American wedding.

It is customary to have a “first dance” between the newly married couple as well as a father-of-the-bride dance with his daughter, and a mother-of-the-groom dance with her son. We are foregoing these, but to do so is a break with American tradition.

You may get fewer RSVPs to an American wedding than you would to an Irish one – they say usually only 2/3 of your guest list comes.

Usually, American couples “block out” rooms at a hotel near the wedding. This is free for you and is considered a courtesy to guests who must travel to be there. Find a suitable hotel, tell them you’re having a wedding and how many rooms you expect to need, and they’ll hold those rooms for your guests at a discounted rate to them.

There is a very matchy-matchy aesthetic at many American weddings. Brides choose colours and everything from the flowers to the invitations to the dresses on the bridesmaids are custom-bought to match perfectly. If your daughter wants to go that route, know that it is your responsibility to pay for the matching clothing. You can simply ask members of the wedding party to wear “a suit” or “a dark dress,” but if you get any more specific than that then you must buy the dresses etc. for them.

Guests expect small (usually quite cheap) “favours” to bring home with them. This can be more a craft project than an expense.

American wedding-goers will drink only very moderately. We have found that liquor shops sell returnable alcohol, so we are planning to have a generous amount around but we also expect to take a lot of it back for a refund.
